Q: How does Weglot translation work?

Answer: Weglot integrates with leading machine translation providers DeepL, Google Translate, and Microsoft Translator (Bing) for accuracy and speed and to ensure that 100% of the content on the website is translated; the “best” translation provider is chosen based on the target language. Through the translation dashboard, admins have full editing control.

Q: Can admins in Weglot be limited to specific schools?

Answer: If your district is using subdomain for each school. In this case, a “workspace” is created for the district using the district domain, then “projects” can be created within the workspace and associated with each school’s subdomain. Users can be added to either the workspace level (full access for the entire district, including all schools), or at the project level, which grants access to one school only.

For districts who are not using subdomains, but instead follow this type of naming convention, www.districtname.com/schoolA, www.districtname.com/schoolB, separate projects cannot be created, so users cannot be restricted by school.

Q: Does Weglot support Caribbean Spanish or Latin American Spanish?

Answer: Yes, that is possible through Weglot’s Custom Language feature. You can create a custom language for Mexican Spanish, using Spanish as base, and making manual edits (e.g. adding glossary rules) to further localize. Each “custom language” will count toward the overall total available as part of the selected plan.

Q: Why shouldn’t I just keep using the free Google Translate option? It offers so many languages.

Answer: Based on cost, you may opt for a smaller number of languages in Weglot; however, bear in mind that this will allow you to provide a better experience for those whose preferred language is among the ones you’ve selected. Google Translate has certainly improved over the years, but can struggle with languages that are grammatically complex, have a large number of words, or have limited data available for translation. If your district is legally required to human-review translations for a set of high frequency non-English languages, the built-in translation feature will simply not allow you to do that.
